ARCTIC CPR

Just wanted to share this photo that was on the front page of a norwegian national paper called Verdens Gang. It is from the evacuation of an avalanche victim that tragically passed away a few hours after this photograph was taken. The 100 m long avalanche came crashing down on a party of three that were backcountry skiing in one of the mountains near Tromsø in Northern Norway.

The victim was evacuated, using a stretcher sledge through the woods with CPR ongoing. The paramedic is sitting on the sledge, straddling the patient, performing CPR while the patient is evacuated through the woods from the avalanche runout-zone.

    Tragicly the patient passed away despite the efforts from a great and very experienced team!

    There is (for some odd reason) debateable evidense for CPR-compression devices !
    Working in Air Ambulance service in Norway, we always bring a LUCAS for cases like this. There is solid experience saying that kompression devices are great for bring hypothermic patients to hospital whilst “safe for the rescuer” CPR is undertaken during transport.

      I definitely second Viking One’s statement regarding the efficacy of mechanical CPR devices. Something like Zoll’s AutoPulse is compact and relatively lightweight, and would not conceivably hamper backcountry rescues with ongoing resus. Thumper-style mechanical devices like the Weil Mini-Med or LUCAS II have a pretty formidable vertical height when you consider the possibility of helo-evacuation via a stokes basket. (No financial disclosures)

      Either way, mechanical CPR over manual CPR any-day when evacuating your patient from the back country!

    I agree with the comments here, but still think
    Prehospital ECMO >>> mechanical CPR > manual CPR.
