Traumatic Brain Injury and the associated brain edema is a killer. Some researches hope to counter the oedema with statins.  There are several articles published on this. One just recently in Critical Care Medicine

It’s an animal study where they inflicted brain trauma on heaps of rats. (I don’t want to know) and gave them statins. They concluded that that Statin protected the rats from brain edema and is neuroprotective.

So crack open them old books on cellular biology and biochemistry and unleash the geek. Links to the article are here. Abstract below.

As for me (i’m perfectly happy with NOT spending any more time with this article) the take home message is that in a decade or so statins might be a part of our arsenal when treating TBI.
