Being the baby registrar in the ICU can be a frustrating experience. You won’t have a clue as to what is going on around you or what is expected of you. Fear not, think FAST HUG and you will be alright. 

The english speaking medical world is obsessed by acronyms.  Some useful ones and some that are just retarded. This one, however, makes sense in light of my own vivid recollections of inadequacy in the ICU. it is basically a job description for junior ICU registrars. If you’ve done all that’s on the FAST-HUGS checklist you’ll do fine next time the consultants rock up and wonder what you’ve been up to all day.
